EOWT Vol.31

Got some pretty exciting new music for this weeks EOWT, first up is a brand new tune from up and coming London band Beaty Heart who sound like an awesome tribal crossbreed of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend. First three tunes are all awesome, Summer Occasion kills it again by making You Da One into a bumping future garage tune. Also new music from my some of my favourite dudes, Flume and Star Slinger. Flume will be in Toronto April 6th so I suggest you all snag tickets.

EOWT Vol.30 // Toro Y Moi at Lee's Palace

This post is going to be mostly a EOWT with a bit of a review of the Toro Y Moi/Wild Belle show in Toronto on Sunday. First off I'll start with the EOWT bit with a groovy Tropical Disco beat remix of Rhye's Open by Jeff Samuel, those drums are absolutely killer. With fresh new James Blake that I feel many of you may have heard I've come with a bootleg from Vlsson who turns Retrograde into a future hip hop vibe. Continuing on the theme of big artist releases I've also got a remix of the new Justin Timberlake song 'Suit and Tie' from Julio Bashmore who turns the track into an organ key disco tune made for the dance-floor. This has to be one of my more upbeat posts so before I throw in a more downtempo song I'll leave you with two awesome remixes more recently from Star Slinger for Bondax and another one from Teen Daze for Said the Whale. The final song of EOWT is an old favourite of mine from T.O artist Foxes in Fiction who creates tunes that are utterly mesmerizing for lack of a better term.

Now for Pt.2 of this post is a little review of the Toro Y Moi/Wild Belle show and some of my favourite tracks from the concert. First of all I want to say both acts absolutely killed it, Wild Belle opened up playing some tracks off of their forthcoming album, Natalie Bergman being a goddess as usual. Toro planned his set out just about perfectly closing right before the encore with the banger off of his new album 'Say That' and closing out the show with the classic 'Low Shoulder'. I haven't really talked too much about Toro's new album but so far (and I know it's premature) I can see it being one of the top albums of 2013.

EOWT Vol.29

This week's post is a bit of a mix of new tunes I've been digging and older songs that I haven't been able to stop listening to for the past few weeks. First up is a brand new Teen Daze Remix of Max Cooper & Braids and it's amazingly hypnotic with the vocal sample plus the chimes. Next two songs after that are two that have been on absolute repeat for me lately and are both essential for a laid back end to the weekend with Work Drugs bringing the tropical feels and Radio Dept. bringing the stylish use of cowbell. Two brand spankin' new songs from some of my favourite artists, The Royal Concept and Gold Panda. First up the Swede Indie Rocker's who are constantly being compared to Phoenix somewhat break free of those chains in their new single adding more of an electronic almost nu disco sound that is shown in "World On Fire". It's been a long time since I've heard new Gold Panda and it never disappoints, he always manages to combine somewhat of an acoustic feel to downtempo electronica. Cruiser is another artist that I suggest you keep your eye on, it's the solo indie pop project of Philadelphia native Andy States and it is awesome feel good music. The last song is a very Gold Pandaesque tune from Houses that will put you straight to sleep (In a very good way), enjoy..

Third Wave - Work Drugs

On Your Side - The Radio Dept.

World On Fire - The Royal Concept

Burnt Out Car In Forest - Gold Panda

Endless Spring - Houses

Moving To Neptune - Cruiser

Top Ten Tracks of 2012

This had to be one of the hands down toughest things to do and take note that these are my Top Ten tracks of 2012 so I apologize if you disagree that's okay but you're wrong and I hate you. I had an initial list of about 90 different songs and it took me a while to narrow them all down to a Top Ten and of course I had some honourable mentions which I'll start with:

Honourable Mentions: The City by Madeon // I'll Be Alright by Passion Pit // Lovers by Brothertiger //Sleep Alone by Two Door Cinema Club // Thinkin Bout You by Frank Ocean

#10I Belong In Your Arms - Chairlift

I first stumbled upon this song looking through artists from Young Turks (The xx, SBTRKT, and John Talabot's Record Label) and then suddenly this song immediately grabbed me. As if I stepped in a time machine right back into the 80's into the world of pop-rock love songs I was absolutely taken by this song. The year 2012 was a lot about new takes on old genres and Chairlift very much came through with this one.

#9 - Jasmine - Jai Paul

This man releases songs at a pace of about 1 song every two years but when he makes a song it's absolute gold. Last we heard from Jai was his hit BTSTU in 2010 and this is right on that level. Once again another genre is being brought back and twisted and Jai is bringing back his own take on Funk.

#8 - The House That Heaven Built - Japandroids

I'm glad I got to sneak a Canadian act in here (although Ryan Hemwsworth's Tinashe Remix was on my radar) without being biased. It's been a while since I've heard a punk rock song that I can really get into and Japandroids did just that with this surprisingly poetic jam.

"When they love you and they will / Tell them all they'll love in my shadow / Anything trying to slow you down / Tell them all to go to hell"

Pretty much the song is saying fuck what's holding you back from conquering your dreams/being happy and that's pretty awesome in my opinion, not to mention the melody is absolutely incredible.

2012 was a big year for the emergence of Chillwave and Blackbird Blackbird, Brothertiger, and Summer Heart all had some awesome releases. This out of all of the Chillwave this year is most definitely my favourite song. The hypnotic drowned out voice of this Swedish sensation gives somewhat of a nostalgic feel to the entire song.

The first really dancey song on the list (I can be biased to dancey songs) and who else it would it be from but Disclosure. If I had to give the breakout artist of 2012 award it would most definitely be to them and I'm not gonna say I called it but I called it (Just being modest). This sexually infused new garage banger gives you chills when played at high volume, not to mention this exact song blew up due to a certain Unofficial video. Hearing that bass drop at 3:53 when I saw them live this year was incredible and I don't think I've ever seen a crowd like it at a show.

#5 - Jet Out Of Tundra - Lotus Plaza

For those of you that don't know Lotus Plaza is a project of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt and if their's one thing I will say about Pundt is that he is fucking cool. His mesmerizing voice plus the repetitive but extremely well done riffs put you into somewhat of a trance. The song is almost dreamlike when it comes to this sense. Lotus Plaza has done a great job as one of the bands putting shoe gaze/dream pop back on the map.

#4 - Inspector Norse - Todd Terje

I won't lie the video of this song is originally what turned me onto it and there is actually an entire story behind this song which I would explain if I had more time so instead watch this. If you don't have a sudden urge to start dancing when you listen to this song then you should make drastic changes in your lifestyle. With the likes of Skrillex bursting onto the Electro scene in recent years it's been a while since we've heard simple electronic music and Todd Terje is bringing it back.

#3 - Waves - Joey Bada$$

As you can tell from my Top Ten so far is 2012 is the year of the comeback genres and I'm not saying rap has been missing for years but the ProEra crew is bringing back the Golden Years of Hip Hop and Joey Bada$$ is their frontrunner. With the emergence of young rappers turning to a more aggressive style such as members of Odd Future and Chief Keef , ProEra delivers laid back flows with a punch and most importantly all of them are incredibly talented rappers.

#2 - You Know You Like It (Bondax Remix) - AlunaGeorge

This song is my vote for Remix of the Year and it was a tough one because I easily would have thrown the original version in the number two spot as well so check it out. AlunaGeorge and Bondax are two breakout artists from 2012 and are helping front the prominent U.K Future Garage scene which is absolutely booming. The bassy future garage synths with the soothing R&B voice of Aluna Francis create a near perfect combination that has been bumped on dancefloors all over.

#1 - Bloom - Gypsy & The Cat

To me one of the main purposes of music is to give you extreme boosts of serotonin and there's not much I can say about this song apart from the fact that it makes you extremely happy. Gypsy and the Cat's new album Late Blue isn't even due out worldwide until this year, this was the sole single off of the album. This song screams summer, beaches, and road trips and I am more than excited to grab a copy of Late Blue.

EOWT Vol.28

First of all I wanna start off by apologizing, it's almost been a month since my last blog post but I've been super busy with movie and school stuff but I'll make it up to you all with a great post. We've also past our 1st year anniversary without realizing, most blogs renovate their whole site but I think we'll give that one a miss for now (one day...). First song is my favourite song by far right now from Swedish chill wave artist David Alexander, the lo-fi guitar riffs with the faded reverby vocals give such a dreamlike quality to the song. Next up is a dubstep artist I stumbled upon who goes by the name of Bronze Whale, he keeps the wobbles fairly simple and toned down which is exactly what I like to hear in dubstep. Next up is an absolute major guilty pleasure song on my part but I'm absolutely loving it, and yes that is the new Wiz Khalifa/The Weeknd colab. After that i've got two tunes that your gonna wanna boogie to, Lovers by Brothertiger and a Todd Terje remix of Hot Chip that brings back that summer disco/house feel. Lastly some chill wave from Blackbird Blackbird (as you can tell i've been in a chill wave phase recently), enjoy..

Everything to Me (Bronze Whale Remix) - Lips

Remember You ft. The Weeknd - Wiz Khalifa

Lovers - Brothertiger

Happy With You - Blackbird Blackbird

How Do You Do (Todd Terje Remix) - Hot Chip

Disclosure + Ryan Hemsworth at Wrongbar

I've been to a fair amount of shows in Toronto and I can safely say Disclosure absolutely blew all the other shows out of the water seeing them last Friday, on top of that I was honoured to witness their Canadian debut. Buying tickets two months in advance was a good choice as tickets were sold out surprisingly quickly. New Garage is slowly taking over as a prominent genre in electronic music, riding on the decline of the great trend of dubstep we saw a few years back (emergence of Skrillex, Rusko, etc.). The combination of soul and deep bass absolutely, for the lack of a better term, get's the crowd grooving. On top of that the dawn of live electronic music is among us with acts like Disclosure, SBTRKT, Bloody Beetroots and others. Live sets are about 100 times more entertaining than your average DJ set and I have come to realize this over time. Speaking of DJ sets not to say they're not entertaining as Ryan Hemsworth was a perfect opener, throwing in Hip Hop with New Garage and Trap tunes. He has been proclaimed by many to be the next coming/Canadian version of Clams Casino. As you can tell from the sidebar, I'm a huge Disclosure fan boy so lot's of these tunes will be re posts but here ya go...

What's In Your Head - Disclosure

Control ft. Ria Ritchie - Disclosure

Latch ft. Sam Smith - Disclosure

My Intention Is War! - Disclosure

Running (Disclosure Remix) - Jessie Ware

Thinkin Bout You (Ryan Hemsworth Bootleg) - Frank Ocean

Deros - Ryan Hemsworth

Boss (Ryan Hemsworth Remix) - Tinashe
