Osheaga's Best

I ended up loafting on my Osheaga's Most Anticipated as I came back after my first night out in Montreal and was obviously in no state for blogging but for those of you who were left in anticipation of who my top two were they were Justice at #2 and SBTRKT at #1. Now going back and ranking the top performances I would place different artists in different places and here is my top 5 from what I saw over the weekend (keep in mind this is completely my own opinion as there were many artists I didn't get to see)

#2 - Madeon
#3 - Keys N Krates
#4 - Birdy Nam Nam/Adventure Club
#5 - Passion Pit/M83/Justice

Let me start off by saying that I found I enjoyed myself the most at the Picnique Electronique Stage this year (formerly the Sennheiser stage last year). The sound quality plus the fact that it was much smaller created for a more fun/intimate atmosphere. Out of my top 5 SBTRKT, Madeon, Adventure Club, and Birdy Nam Nam played at this stage with Keys N Krates on the Tree Stage, M83 on the Sennheiser (best stage for sound quality) and Passion Pit/Justice on the main stages.

I'll leave you with my favourite songs from the various sets/performances of these artists. First one up was Skrillex's remix of Birdy Nam Nam's banger "Goin' In"being the last song of their set everyone was going absolutely wild to it. SBTRKT dropped a new bass track 'Surely" which with the live drums got everyone jammin' and Madeon dropped the happiest nu disco tune of all time "Dancing With The DJ" by The Knocks. An old favourite Adventure Club tune of mine is their remix of the Foxes song 'Youth' really blows me away every time I hear it as it shows just how good AC is at taking more acoustic/folky songs and turning them into dubstep bangers. The last tune i've added in is from Keys N Krates sampling Otis Redding (made famous by Watch the Throne) their set was the last one I saw on the weekend and their live remixing absolutely blew me away (and they're from Toronto), I'll be hoping to catch them next time they're in T.O as their set was a whole new experience for me combining hip hop, electro, and dubstep into a single mix. Anyways I'll be sure to start posting more again but this concludes my Osheaga posts until next year, enjoy...

Your End Of Weekend Tunes Vol.14

Got a couple of treats for you this week musicwise, kickin' it off with a fresh new tune from Chris Malinchak, i'm a sucker for those 'pharoah stabs' often used by Disclosure. One of my favourite tunes this week is the first single from Vampire Weekend's bassist, Chris Baio, everyone in that band is suddenly creating incredible solo tunes (Chris being different and going more to the underground house route). The track came with the inscription 'We make colourful music because we dance in the dark' and indeed this tune 'Tanto' can be described as colourful. Finally we have RAC's first original track featuring Penguin Prison, rather stoked to hear more original stuff from them as they always kill it. I've also thrown in a long ass Joe Goddard remix (listen to the whole thing its worth it), a classic Bon Iver tune and another classic SBTRKT tune, enjoy..

Your End Of Weekend Tunes Vol.12

Ayo, this week i've got another mixup of fresh tunes and old favourites. For the freshness, i've got some new Handbook (Hip Hop producer from the U.K) and it is an absolute essential tune for a good ole sunny day. Evenings also just released an EP of unreleased tunes and one that really stood out to me is 'Chesapeake' which is another extremely laid back track. After watching SBTKRT's full Coachella performance I remembered how much I love him and so I figured I'd throw in a classic tune from SBTRKT this week along with another classic fav of mine by Pnau. Continuing on the unreleased theme i've thrown in a short and sweet unreleased track from Odd Future's king of cool, Mike G. The final song is from Toronto's BBNG , a cover of James Blake's 'Limit To Your Love' which is absolutely killer and off their latest album BBNG2 which you can download on their Bandcamp, enjoy..

U.K Garage/Post-Dubstep

Alot of my favourite music these days is coming out of the bursting U.K Post Dubstep/Garage Scene. My first experience with the genre was through Jamie xx (producer/bandmember of the xx), it was mainly after I saw him live over the summer that I gained even more respect for the genre and looked more into it (check out this sweet mini doc on Jamie). This genre is spilling over into mainstream music as we see Jamie getting the producing credits for Drake and Rihanna's new song 'Take Care' sampling Jamie's remix of "I'll Take Care of U" by Gil Scott Heron 

Other producers like SBTRKT have brought to attention everyone from Drake to Little Dragon (both who have done collaborations with SBTRKT). Three other producers who I've slated for having big years in 2012 are Fantastic Mr.Fox, Starslinger, and Deadboy (so keep an eye out for 'em).
